' I want to convey an atmosphere, the essence of the place and to capture the mood of a particular moment rather than just its topography. The varied effects and moods that differing weather conditions can create are of a notable influence. I am particularly draw to the effects of sunlight, emerging from heavy cloud or reflecting on water and aim to create an atmospheric painting that moves from the purely figurative towards the abstract. I start with an idea but I’m never quite sure how it will develop and enjoy following where the paint and textures lead. I tend to use natural earth colours, greys, browns, blues, ochres and sienna to suggest the unique feel of a place and to capture a fleeting moment.
I work mainly in oil and acrylic, building up layers of paint but also enjoy using mixed media and experimenting to create a variety of effects and textures.'
