First is Giles Davis a new member of the prestigious group Peak District Artisans his work is really making an impression in the region with a cutting edge!
Giles creates his landscapes entirely from recycled magazine cuttings. He loves seeing how portions of interesting printed photos can be transformed into something completely different and new – a bit of pie-crust becomes a sandy beach, or an icy landscape becomes the crest of a wave. Giles works from his own photos for reference, sketching a landscape in pencil first, then working from a palette of cuttings arranged by colour, looking for the right tones and textures to blend together. He finds inspiration from the rich variety of dramatic natural landscapes, especially hills, mountains and coastlines.
Second is Gallery favourite Chantal Kelly who is the founding member of Medley Art Group, Chantal creates freestanding, leaded glass, abstract and figurative panels in vibrant colours and textures using traditional techniques. With the abstract pieces, she aims to capture the excitement of modern art but uses glass rather than paint to form blocks of colour. Visiting Iceland, she was struck by the use of abstract shapes in vibrant colours in the churches which were reflected off the whitewashed walls of the building’s interiors. Inspiration comes both from the local environment and from the glass itself where colours and textures suggest the design. Integral to the enjoyment of many of the pieces are the hand crafted oak stands which ensure the pieces can be enjoyed anywhere within the home not only on in windows but by a lamp, a candle or a fireplace……indeed anywhere that light can play on the colour and the texture of the glass.
