Peter Watson studied art at Derby School of Art in 1973 under the tuition of professional artist, Harold Barklam. In 1974 he continued his studies at Derby College of Art, Peter then embarked on a career as a sign writer/screen printer for a major retail company. In recent years his passion for art has been rekindled and he is now creating work on a regular basis.
His main subject matter is landscapes and coastline, and living near Ashbourne in the Derbyshire Dales, this gives him every opportunity to sketch and paint if a subject, mood, and weather conditions inspire him. Using mainly acrylics on either board or canvas, He likes to work at speed to capture the moment in one session. This he feels creates a freshness and vibrancy to a painting that is not overworked.
Peter won Derbyshire Life magazines’ landscape painter of the year 2017’ open to amateurs and professionals, and won peoples vote at Ashbourne arts festival for 2016 and 2017. Peter considers this this is quite an achievement, as he still works full time.
