Professional watercolour artist Sheila Gill of Chesterfield Derbyshire, exploits watercolour in its many forms, is fascinated by its possibilities and is highly expert in her craft. Her watercolour paintings have earned her a number of "highly commended" awards. Flowers as a subject, though, have been joined by landscapes and animals.
"I've always loved gardening," explains Sheila, "and flower painting was a natural extension of this passion. But the beauty of the Derbyshire landscape, particularly the White Peak, begs to be painted, and I spend a lot of time working outdoors."
This month our featured maker is Louise West Lace Design known for her Bobbin Lace teaching and designing she also produces wonderful jewellery inspired by her lace practice. Lousie will also be with us demonstrating her lace techniques during Derbyshire Open Arts weekend May 28th – 30th.
‘I regularly use historical resources for design work although I am currently developing my own botanical illustration for use in designs, but with sub conscious reference to historical styles.’
‘While lace is the main focus of my working practice, it has taken on many formats and continues to inspire and develop in many ways, some of which are unexpected. The jewellery design is a much more permanent and lasting vision of the historical textile, recounting memories and forms contemporary wearable art of the future.’
There is a selection of Louise's jewellery on display in the gallery.
We look forward to welcoming you to our gallery and we are open Wed – Sun 10 – 5pm.
